Science 8 GIS Activities

Introduction:

Students in 8th grade science classes at Phoenix Country Day School work with My World GIS to study principles of the environment. These topics include Climate Change, Oceanography and Marine Biology. The high school AP Environmental science class also uses GIS to illustrate and examine Climate, Biomes, Water resources and other patterns of environmental interest to students. All students create independent projects of their own design.

El Niño and the Kelp Forest.
Channel islands data and data library

Overview description:
This lesson examines the El Niño phenomenon and its impact on the kelp forest of Catalina Island, the southernmost of the Channel Islands.

Invisible Boundaries: Created by CIPE

Overview description:
This lesson has students examiine the distribution of sea surface tepaerature across the Channel Islands region. By careful examination of the distribution of key fish species the students find the "invisible" boundary, temperature.

Climate Change Learning Activities

Greenland Melting

Overview description:
Students examine the Greenland Melting extents by year from 1992 to 2003. This data combined with glacial velocity data points to the impact of Global warming on the Greenland Ice Sheet.

North Atlantic Salinity

Overview description:
The focus of this lesson is to have students understand what contributes to the dense water formation sites in the North Atlantic. These sites have shown notable change in the years 1950 - 2003. This lesson draws students attention to the change in the salinity in the North Atlantic and the potential impact on climate.

Climate Change Impacts on the North Atlantic

Overview description:
This is the third lesson in the series. The lesson combines the changes in the Salinity and the great conveyor belt currents and has students predict and examine the impacts of the North Atlantic freshening on the climate of Europe.

Data Sets for Sharing

These are zipped folders of data. To use them first download them and then unzip them. The data are ready for use in My World. Put the folder in the My World data folder. Launch My World. It will automatically index the files. These folders contain data library files so you will now see a data library for each of these data sets. You can build your own projects from this data. Please do not use these data sets for commercial uses, and send me any feedback about the lessons so that I can keep improving them, thanks.
