Glossary of terms for chemical equations - by Ryan Gibbons

Chemical Reaction

A well defined example of a chemical change

Reactant

The substances that react in a chemical reaction

Product

The final substance created by a chemical reaction

Coefficient

A number that represents the number of units of a substance taking place in a chemical reaction

Cloroflorocarbon

CFC’s a gas that is used in aerosols, air-conditioning and as propellants it is damaging to the ozone. When the CFC is released into the air it floats up into the atmosphere where the sunlight breaks the bond of he molecules in the substance releasing chlorine molecule one chlorine molecule can destroy tens of thousands of ozone molecules.

Balanced Chemical Equation

An equation that has the same amount of each substance on the reactant and the product side.

Synthesis Reaction

A reaction where two or more substance combine

A + B = AB )

Decomposition Reaction

When one substance breaks down into it original components these reactions require some form of electricity

( AB = A + B )

Single-Displacement Reaction

A reaction where one element replaces another in a compound

( AB + C = CB + A )

Double-Displacement Reaction

A Reaction where two elements replace two other element in their compounds

( AB + CD = AC + BD )

Precipitate

Is an insoluble compound formed during a Double-Displacement Reaction

Exothermic Reaction

A reaction that releases some kind of energy ( i.e. heat )

Catalyst

A substance that speeds up a reaction

Inhibitor

A compound that prevents a chemical reaction from occurring

Endothermic Reaction

A reaction that requires energy in order for the reaction to take place
