Science 8 The Colors of Light

Assignment sheet and timeline for the Colors of light Unit

General Information:

You will have 4- 5 class days to complete the unit.
You may work ahead if you wish, a suggested timeline is below. Check off tasks as you complete them.

At home: read chapter 14 in your text book

In-class: complete the following activities and explorations in the "packet" and listed here

Assessment : chose option A or B to demonstrate your understanding of this material.

A) create a secret message that utilizes a blue filter and take a short 20 question quiz.
B) write a one page summary of a machine such as a TV, computer or printing press that utilizes the principles of additive or subtractive color. Include a picture of the machine.

Timeline:
Day 1

Explore: the wavelengths of light.

use the diffraction gratings and prisms to separate light into its component colors. record your observations on your worksheet packet page 1

create a secret message with the outline masters, examine it with the red and green filters.

Day 2 Explain: use your book chapter 14 and the CD-ROM or book the Way things work and the web sites listed below to answer the questions in your packets pages 2-5
Day 3

Explore: Additive color.

Use web sites and CD-ROM to add light wavelengths and to build colors. Answer the questions. What are the primary colors of light? How are other colors made? Use the color blocks and a bright light source such as a flashlight to build colors.

Use the lamps with the colored bulbs and complete the last page in your packet.

Day 4

Explore: filters and colored light

How do our eyes see colors? What happens to light so that we can see colored objects?

Observe the bulletin board - colors of light with the lights on and off and through the filters, red, green and blue in your lab baskets. Explain what you see complete the pages in your packet colors and filters

Day 5

Evaluate: either take the test or turn in your paper at the end of the class period today.
