CHEMICAL COMPOSITION COMPARISON EXERCISE

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this activity is for students to examine the chemical composition of the human body and ocean water. From this activity students will gain a familiarity with some of the common elements in our environment. This activity is also intended to give students practice using the graphing program in Apple Works.

MATERIALS:
In order to complete this exercise students will need:
A computer with Apple Works software.
Data of the constituents in the human body and in seawater.

PROCEDURE:
Open a Apple works spreadsheet.
Set up an appropriate spreadsheet to achieve the types of graphs described below.
Enter the data from below. Be aware that you may have to interpret and alter some of the data.
Graph the data as a pie chart for the principal components of seawater and as a side by side bar graph for seawater vs. the human body.
Paste your spreadsheet and graph into a word processing document and answer the questions.

QUESTIONS:
Write out the answers to these questions in your document. Submit a copy of your document in the science submit folder.

Describe the steps you took to create the graphs.
Describe the steps you took to paste the spreadsheet and graph into your word processing document.
