Instructions for using the CD-ROM to accompany the
text:
The way things work.
This is a basic set of instructions, more techniques for using this CD will become obvious to you with your use of the tools available.

Getting Started
Insert the CD 'The Way Things Work' into the CD ROM drive.
If you double click on the WTW 2.) icon the program should launch.
You can also launch the program from the applications folder. In the
applications / science section you will see "The Way Things Work
CDT". Hold down this menu and scroll to the program. The opening
screen will then be displayed offering the several options. Choose
the one that says "The Way Things work/prg". The application should
launch from here. A common mistake is to choose the New WTW - we have
2 different programs be sure you choose the right one!
PRINCIPLES OF SCIENCE. Double click on this option to display a list of areas of interest, click on one of these to display information about that topic. Always a good place to start. Topics are listed and then you can follow the tracks to the related machines.
WORKSHOP. Double click on this option to display a number of various objects. Click on any one of these to experience what it does. You can turn your view of the warehouse by clicking at the edges.
MACHINES. Double click on this option to display an A - Z of machines. Click on the letter of your choice then select OK. Move through the entries by clicking the arrows at the bottom of the screen. Double click on an piece of machinery to display information about it. Change your selection by clicking a letter of the alphabet at the bottom of the screen.
HISTORY. Double click on this option to display The History of Machines screen. You can select either The Birth of Science 1251-1700 or The Industrial Revolution 1701-1850. Move between these by clicking the arrow keys then click OK to select the one of your choice.
INVENTORS. Double click on this option to display an open book
with an index to the left. Information about inventors and their
inventions will be displayed. Turn the pages of the book by clicking
the RED corner at the bottom of each page.
INDEX. Double click on this option to display an Index of the
topics covered on the CD. Select an item from this Index or type the
item you are looking for in the space provided, then click
OK.
MAMMOTH SCHOOL HOUSE. We'll be using this section to track
your progress through out the trimester. You will need to enter your
correct name and section when prompted at the beginning of each
lesson. And you will need to remember which CD you were using so that
you can always return to the same one. You may take the tests
whenever you are ready. There are 22 principles to study on this CD.
Plan to complete 2 - 3 a week. You are welcome to use break, lunch or
study hall to work. OPTIONS. Double click this option to view
the Mammoth Movies. A list of subjects will be displayed, click an
item in this list to start a movie about the subject chosen.
HELP. Double click on this option to display a list of Help
contents.
Printing
Move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen to display a Menu Bar. Select FILE then PRINT, then make your selections from the print options then click PRINT. You are discouraged form printing everything here, you HAVE a textbook already.
Quitting The Way Things Work
Move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen, select FILE then QUIT. Click the box at the top left of The Way Things Work window to close it. Drag the icon The Way Things Work icon to the wastebasket to eject the disk.
