Summer Reading - Never Cry Wolf

Preview. List three of the author's qualifications and one bias. Also state the general subject.

1. Describe Farley Mowat’s youth and give an explanation for why he eventually became a biologist.


2. Describe Farley’s "Desiderata" and how it might be different for scientists heading into the field in today’s world. How would you alter the list? How did Farley alter the list?


3. Did Farley have any pre-conceptions about wolves? Describe three events that happened throughout the book and how this changed his thoughts about the wolf.


4. Did Mike have any pre-conceptions about white men? Were there any actions on Farley’s part that Mike did not understand? Why might this have occurred?


5. At the end of chapter 7, Farley says, " I had made my decision that from this hour onward, I would go open-minded into the lupine world and learn to see and know the wolves not for what they were supposed to be, but for what they actually were."

How did this change Farley?
Where did he go?
What did he take with him and what did he leave behind?


6. What were Farley’s tools for observing the wolves? How might these tools be different for today’s scientist? How did Ootek help Farley with his observance of the wolves?


7. Describe how Farley studied each aspect of wolf life listed below and what he learned. Pack structure, daily life, feeding, play, mating and raising pups, marking territory.


8. Choose one of the four themes listed below. Describe what this theme means to you. How is this theme illustrated in the book, give three specific examples.
