Format for lab write - ups
All lab reports should be written in the following format for science 5 and 8. This format is consistent throughout the science world. Examples can be found throughout this website and in all your books.

Title:

This should be stated in a question and answer format if possible.
example " How do clouds effect temperatures on the earth's surface ?" include the date

Purpose and Objectives:

This should clearly explain why you are undertaking the lab and what you hope to learn.

Materials:

List your materials here so that someone else could reproduce your lab. Be very specific include sizes and quantities. Use a list or numbered format.

Hypothesis:

State what you think the outcome of your lab will be. Remember, a hypothesis is an informed guess and an incorrect hypothesis is as valuable as a correct one or even better!

Procedure:

Again, list EXACTLY the steps you plan to take to complete your experiment, think recipe. Use a numbered list here. If you repeat your lab and change steps later, discuss this in your discussion.

Vocabulary:

List all new vocabulary and definitions here.

Data and Observations:

Once you have planned your lab you will know what you are looking for. Now you are ready to make a data table for collecting your information. Draw it out here. Leave room for extra ideas that will happen during your lab. Don't forget to include units with your data.

Discussion and Questions:

  • What have you learned?
  • How does this relate to the "real" world?
  • What was interesting ? unexpected?
  • How might you change your procedure to learn more next time you did this lab?
  • Did you have any problems or sources of error?
  • How does your new learning relate to old knowledge?
  • Any graphs or interpretations of your data go in this section.

Conclusions:

In this section you restate your hypothesis. Did you prove or disprove it? This section is very short.
