Date Assigned: September 3, 2002
This is a list of possible topics for your Oceanography portfolio. It is separated into types of assignments so that you will have the opportunity to stretch your learning styles from research and laboratory to more creative and artistic styles of work. You are expected to select some of each type of work. For a C grade, you must complete 1 of the assignments listed here. For a B, 2, an A you will include 3 completed projects. Original ideas are always welcome. For written work such as reports or research the minimum length is 3/4 of a page of writing. All research must have a bibliographical reference at the bottom of the page. Items without this will not receive full credit, no matter how wonderful they are.Once they are completed, portfolio projects are to be kept in your science project folder until the end of the trimester deadline.
*****At least one project must be presented in a Electronic format. The letters "hyp" appear next to selections that can be presented in Electronically. *****
You may use books, magazines or periodicals
There are many good resources for your research on the web see useful links - oceanography.
Evaluative:
1. Is a pollution free ocean important to the survival of the world? Why or why not? here's a page that may help.
reef watch2. Evaluate different methods being used for underwater exploration today. How have these methods changed in the past 50 years? What promise does that give us for the future?
3. Read the book the Voyage of the Frog or a similar adventure story about the ocean. Review the plot, setting, theme and characters. Do the characters such as David in the Voyage of the frog make good decisions, why or why not? Voyage of the frog is on reserve in the PCDS library.
4. How can we maintain a healthy population of fish and other sea creatures and still feed the world? Investigate fish farming. LOHS Ocean Biodiversity and Endangered Species
5. Recently a new solution for reducing carbon buildup in the atmosphere was proposed. The idea, described in Scientific American, is to add fertilizer and iron to the ocean. This would increase the Ocean's population of plankton. Do you think this is a good plan? Why or why not?
Cognitive:
1. Collect articles about El Nino and how it has affected the weather and climate of Arizona.
2. Memorize the names and locations of all the oceans and at least six seas in the world. Be able to point them out on a globe and fill in their names on an outline map of the world. "hyp"

6. Draw a diagram that explains "doldrums' and "horse latitudes". Why were these named this way?
7. Complete the coloring of the sea floor map and be able to demonstrate that you can find each of the following on an unlabelled map, abyssal plain, trench, rise, ridge, slope, shelf, atoll, island. You may also want to do a 3-D model. "hyp"
8. Investigate marine animals of the Pacific ocean. Divide your list into mammals, fish, invertebrates. List the locations and temperature range for each organism. Use the database found here for help Aquarium of the Pacific Online Learning Center - Home Page
Convergent :
1. Make a timeline showing the history of the major events in oceanography in the world. "hyp"
2. Watch a National Geographic, NOVA or Jacques Cousteau special, video and answer summary questions on the web (see Videos) or write a brief summary of the video. Some videos are on reserve in the PCDS library, others may be rented at your local video hangout.
3. Prepare a report on the ocean as a food source for the future. What else might we find in the ocean that could be useful for our survival?
4. Investigate the Inuit people and how they live in the cold weather and depend on the sea to live. Research how their food shelter and clothing relates to the sea. .
5. Make a mobile depicting ocean creatures largest to smallest, limit 10 creatures. "hyp"
