Phoenix Country Day School is seeking a full-time Co-Director / Director of College Counseling (title will be based on level of experience) to begin for the 2019-20 school year. Reporting directly to the Head of School and working closely as a College Counseling team of four (along with Assistant/Co-Director of College Counseling, Registrar, and Essays/Support Specialist), this individual will support students, parents, and Upper School faculty through the college search and application process, keeping student well-being at the center of the process.
The PCDS Upper School enrolls approximately 280 students, with senior classes averaging 70-75 students. The academic program is characterized by student choice and opportunities for students and staff members to play to their strengths; the school recently completed a multi-year process of dropping the Advanced Placement curriculum, and prides itself on an engaging, challenging academic experience. As the only Pre-K through 12 independent school in the greater Phoenix area, PCDS students are uniquely prepared to make an impact on the world around them; approximately 80% of students matriculate to college out-of-state, and decisions are driven by fit and match, landing graduates at a wide variety of universities, liberal arts colleges, and some international programs. Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Educating students and parents on the college search and application process through College Counseling Small Group classes, group presentations, family meetings, and one-on-one sessions
- Guiding students in the creation and revision of their college application lists
- Advocating for students throughout the application process, including writing a detailed, personalized, and timely School letter of recommendation for approximately 30-40 members of the senior class
- Co-teaching Junior and Senior college counseling small groups, a non-graded class in which students explore their strengths and interests, as well as the step-by-step processes of applying to college
- Welcoming 150+ college admissions representatives from around the country
- Providing support to students in writing college essays and completing applications
- Being knowledgeable about a national and international scope of college and universities, as well as the programs and unique experiences offered
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with colleges and universities and their representatives
- Representing PCDS at strategic regional and national conferences and workshops
- Participating in the life of PCDS in full, including serving as an advisor, a member of the PCDS Upper School faculty community, and representing the School and its mission and values as a whole
- Presenting to Parents’ Association, Board, and other appropriate stakeholders
- Planning additional events to complement a strategic college counseling vision (case studies, campus visits, financial aid and application workshops)
Qualified candidates will exhibit:
- A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred
- Excellent speaking and interpersonal skills
- Superb writing skills
- A joy for working with teenagers and their parents
- Conviction, patience, empathy, and a deep understanding of the concerns of students and families in the college admissions process
- A collaborative work style
- An accommodating and flexible spirit, and an ability to respond nimbly to constantly changing circumstances
- An ability and eagerness to work with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences
- The highest ethical standards and sound judgement
Ideal candidates will have some experience in:
- Previous college counseling experience, ideally in an independent school setting and/or previous college admissions experience that included evaluation of independent school applicants
