Head of Upper School

PCDS seeks a dynamic, innovative, experienced educational leader to lead the Upper School, a division of 40+ faculty and staff members and 280 students in grades 9-12, beginning July 2019.  The new Head of Upper School will serve as a member of the administrative team, report directly to the Head of School, and work closely with the other Division Heads and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to ensure a strong and cohesive Upper School program.  The Head of Upper School also enjoys the partnership of a dynamic team of educators, including a Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students, and Academic Dean.

The opportunity to be the next Head of Upper School at PCDS is an opportunity to build upon and enhance a program that has been strengthened under current leadership.  Faculty members feel personally and professionally supported, communication with parents is strong, and students are very positive about their experience.  The next Head of Upper School will have the opportunity to play an integral role in advancing efforts to ensure scope and sequence of the Upper School curriculum, support curricular alignment with the Middle School, and work with the other divisional leaders to strengthen student transitions between divisions.  Additionally, the Head of Upper School will join a dynamic, collaborative, supportive, good-humored, and intelligent administrative team.

Lower School Teaching Positions

The Lower School is now accepting applications for elementary teaching positions for the 2019-2020 school year. Our program philosophy is that we seek to care for the whole child with passion and joy. Creating strong relationships with families is an integral component of the PCDS program, as we believe that active parent involvement is critical to a child’s success.

The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s Degree in Education and will be joining a team that values collaboration and teamwork to co-create a curriculum that uses inquiry-based teaching strategies with an emphasis on collaborative learning. Candidates for this position will have demonstrated the following characteristics: passion for teaching children, flexibility, patience, respect for the child and family, creativity, compassion, authenticity in all relationships, love of learning, high energy, sense of humor, and the ability to work collaboratively with other staff.

Upper School Biology/Physics Teacher

PCDS is seeking a full-time Upper School (grades 9-12) Biology/Physics Teacher for the 2019-20 school year.  The position requires the ability to teach introductory-level courses in at least two of the three core disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

A successful candidate will have experience teaching science in a rigorous academic environment and be interested in curricular innovation.  He or she will be devoted to every student's learning, will have a positive attitude, and will be committed to constantly improving his or her craft.  He or she will model the qualities that we expect in our students: curiosity, hard work, collaboration, generosity, and integrity.   

Essential Duties Include

  • Teaching 4-5 sections of science courses
  • Being an advisor to 8-9 students
  • Attending regular department and faculty meetings
  • Participating as a sponsor or coach for an extracurricular activity, sport, or club
  • Using technology effectively to enhance student learning

A Bachelor’s degree in science or a related field is required.  A Master’s degree is preferred.  Teaching certification is not required.

Learning Specialist/Counselor for Middle & Upper School

Phoenix Country Day School seeks a Learning Specialist/Counselor to begin in the fall of 2019. The Learning Specialist/Counselor is responsible for supporting students in grades 5-12 who have mild to moderate learning needs. The Learning Specialist helps students who may have an Individualized Learning Plan as a result of a student’s psycho-educational evaluation. The Learning Specialist is also responsible for developing learning plans for students who might need their learning extended through supplemental enrichment. They will also be responsible for securing accommodations for College Board Tests for eligible students. The Learning Specialist works closely with faculty as a consultative expert to differentiate curriculum according to students' strengths and challenges. Additionally, this individual will work to support the mental health needs of students and provide one on one counseling.  They will be part of the Counseling Department and collaborate with other health and wellness staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working collaboratively with faculty to provide coaching and support for students with specific learning differences
  • Identify the need for external learning evaluations and facilitate the process of outside referrals
  • Communicating regularly with parents with regards to testing accommodations for both internal and external assessments
  • Inform parents’ of their roles with regards to paperwork and testing accommodations and liaise with counselors and external testing administrators when necessary
  • Document and communicate learning evaluation results, recommendations and accommodations to teachers, advisors, tutors and parents
  • Secure accommodations for standardized testing for eligible students
  • Consult with teachers periodically to follow up on students with learning needs to ensure recommendations and accommodations are executed
  • Help facilitate smooth transition for incoming Upper School students
  • Collaborate and meet regularly with Counselors and Division Heads to work on school-wide priorities and coordination
  • Attend Student Wellness and Action (SWAT) Meetings
  • Teach a Health and Wellness Course
  • Provide individual counseling/learning support for students struggling with both academic and socio-emotional needs


Applicants must have a Master's degree in Special Education/Learning Disabilities, or a related field, and a minimum of three years of experience working in a classroom setting with children with needs. They should possess significant knowledge of learning disabilities, the ability to interpret results of IQ, achievement, and learning disability diagnostic tests as well as training in developing and implementing strategies that will allow different learning styles to achieve success. Additionally, experience in direct counseling and mental health is preferred.

Long-Term Substitute Upper School Chemistry

PCDS is seeking a Long-Term Substitute in the area of Upper School Science for the first three months of the 2019-20 school year. The position requires the ability to teach introductory and advanced levels of Chemistry. A successful candidate will have experience teaching science in a rigorous academic environment. Candidates will be devoted to every student's learning, will have a positive attitude, and will be committed to constantly improving their craft. Candidates will model the qualities that we expect in our students: curiosity, hard work, collaboration, generosity, and integrity.

Maintenance Worker/School Bus Driver

Phoenix Country Day School is looking for an afternoon maintenance worker along with P.M./Weekend School Bus Driver.  Must be able to work evenings, Saturdays and flexible hours.  Responsible primarily for driving field trips and sports runs.  In addition to driving, will also act as a school maintenance worker performing basic campus repairs and preventative maintenance.

Maintenance Worker Responsibilities

  • Conducting routine inspections of premises and equipment
  • Making minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical and plumbing repairs
  • Performing cleaning activities such as dusting, mopping, emptying trash, etc.
  • Diagnosing mechanical issues and correcting them
  • Repairing machines, equipment, or structures as necessary

Maintenance Worker Requirements

  • Proven maintenance experience
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools
  • Ability to take apart machines, equipment, or devices to remove and replace defective parts
  • Ability to check blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary
  • Ability to use common tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills and wrenches
  • Strong organizational, time management and follow-up skills
  • Eye for detail
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs

School Bus Driver Requirements

  • Arizona Class B, CDL with Passenger (P), School Bus (S), and Air Brake Endorsement (A)
  • Current Arizona School Bus Driver Certificate
  • Current DOT Physical Long Form
  • Current First Aide & CPR Certification
  • Current Refresher Course and Physical Performance Test

Guaranteed 30 hours per week with full benefits.  DOT and DPS Drug Test will be administered if hired.
